Why Build a New Camp?
For years, the demand to come to Camp Lakeview has been so great that we have had to turn hundreds away annually. Although this is a good problem to have, it is still a problem! Ministries are not supposed to turn people away! And we hate having to do it, especially when we know how beneficial a Christian camping experience can be for the spiritual life of youth.
To solve the problem, and to provide additional opportunities for future growth, our Board of Directors has decided to develop an additional camp site immediately to the south of the existing camp. This new camp will be called “Lakeview Villages”.
What Has Been Done in Previous Years?
In the fall of 2008, the new lake was formed and the dam was constructed. Above-average rainfall in 2009 has filled the lake.
In the summer and fall of 2009, site work has been completed, including clearing the trees in all needed areas, leveling the athletic field and parking areas, carving out the roadways and filling them with stone, and laying all utility lines.
What Has Been Done so Far in 2010?
As of August 16th, we have completed construction of eight camper cabins — enough cabins for two villages. A third set of four cabins is currently under construction and has all the walls up, most of the siding, and some of the rafters in place.
The bathhouse/shelterhouse buildings at the first two villages are under construction. One is completely roofed in, while the other one still has only the exterior cinder-block walls completed.
Finally, a new devotional area has been constructed in the middle of the village camp area.
What Needs to be Done Yet in 2010?
We would like to complete all the projects currently underway by October 1st — including the third set of four village cabins and both bathhouses currently under construction.
Construction of the Main Lodge will begin during the fall of 2010. Early work on this building will be handled by an outside contractor. It is our goal to get the shell of this building completed before winter so that subcontractors and volunteers can work on it throughout the colder months.
What Will the Servant Week Be Like?
OPTION 1 – RESIDENTIAL PACKAGE
Servant Week Volunteers will arrive on Sunday late-afternoon or evening and stay until Friday afternoon. They will work from breakfast through supper, then spend time in the evening participating in a group Bible study, relaxing, and socializing.
Spring Servants will stay in Mohegan Lodge on main camp while the first village is under construction. Summer Servants will be housed at a completed village at the new site.
Lakeview will provide all the food for 13 meals and will cook each lunch. Servants will take turns cooking breakfast and supper in the camp dining hall or designate one of the group to be the “all-time cook”. Thursday supper will be a celebration meal at a restaurant of the group’s choice (at the group’s expense).
Work will be coordinated by Lakeview Villages Site Manager John Dobrinski. Morning devotions and evening Bible studies will be led by a volunteer Spiritual Life Leader.
The suggested donation for housing, meals, and program is $75 per person for all adult weeks, and $100 for the two youth weeks. This is merely designed to offset the cost of meals and utilities.
OPTION 2 – COMMUTER PACKAGE
Servant Week Volunteers arrive each morning and leave every afternoon. Lunch will be provided at NO CHARGE. This option can be used for a whole week of service or just for a single day. So even those with busy schedules can help make a difference!
What Type of Servants Are Needed?
Although skilled volunteers are particularly useful, everybody can help! If you consider yourself to be “unskilled”, we can find a job that matches your talents or we can teach you a new talent. In each group, we would like to have a mixture of skilled and unskilled labor.
Do You Need Spiritual Life Leaders?
Sure do! We are looking for one volunteer each week to help lead the morning devotions and evening Bible studies, then work with the group throughout the day.
Lutheran pastors, teachers, and DCE’s are especially trained for this kind of service and they would be our first choice. But others might be suited for this role as well.
The Spiritual Life Leader may be someone coming with a group from their congregation, or it might be someone coming by themselves and looking to meet new brothers & sisters in Christ.
If you are interested in serving in this role for at least one week, please contact Tom Franke at the camp office (812-342-4815).
