This is another major step toward our goal of developing an additional camp site directly across Lake Road from the existing site. The new camp will help us meet the overwhelming demand to attend Camp Lakeview, as well as provide numerous opportunities for future growth.

Now that the site work is complete, the next step is to construct all the needed buildings, including the dining hall (“Main Lodge”), village cabins, and bathhouses. We hope to accomplish all this in 2010 and be ready to greet our first campers in the summer of 2011. Of course, that all depends on the progress of our “Let the Children Come” capital campaign.

Our ultimate vision is to reach as many kids as possible with the Gospel message. God has definitely blessed us so far, and we pray that He continues to bless our efforts as we try to touch more children with the love of God and the wonderful news of salvation through Christ!

The “Let the Children Come” Capital Campaign is moving forward, one friend at a time. Through advance commitments and leadership pledges from the camp staff, Board members, and other camp supporters, we currently have pledges for $1,351,972 of the $2.5 million needed.

Rather than seeking one-time gifts, we have been asking friends of the camp to spread their commitment over a three-year pledge, enabling them to enlarge their contribution. Some have even decided to give over a five-year period to maximize their involvement

We will continue seeking lead gifts until we reach three-fourths of our campaign goal. Then we will bring the campaign to the general public for one gigantic push toward the finish line.

We still have a long way to go, but with God’s blessing, and the help of a tremendous circle of backers, we can do it! And soon, we’ll be able to provide a Christian camping experience to every child who wants to come to Lakeview.

In 2010, it is our goal to build all the necessary buildings to open for campers in June 2011. Although construction of the Main Lodge will be handled by an outside contractor, all other facilities at the new site will be constructed mainly by Servant Week volunteers.

Servant Week volunteers will help build all of the Village Cabins (20’x12’ plus porch), the Shelter/Bathhouse buildings in each village, an outdoor devotional area, athletic storage sheds, woodsheds, lighted walking paths, a recycling center, erosion-control walls, and even do some landscaping.

Servant Week Volunteers will arrive on Sunday late-afternoon or evening and stay until Friday afternoon. They will work from breakfast through supper, then spend time in the evening participating in a group Bible study, relaxing, and socializing.

Spring Servants will stay in Mohegan Lodge on main camp while the first village is under construction. Summer Servants will be housed at a completed village at the new site. Lakeview will provide all the food for most meals, but the servants will take turns cooking some of the meals. Thursday supper will be a celebration meal at a restaurant of the group’s choice.

Work will be coordinated by Lakeview Villages Site Manager John Dobrinski. Morning devotions and evening Bible studies will be led by a volunteer Spiritual Life Leader. We are asking for a $75 per person donation for all adult weeks, and $100 for the two youth weeks. This donation is merely intended to offset the cost of meals and utilities.

To achieve our goal, we need 15-20 Servant Week volunteers each session. These can be people who come as a group from a single congregation or people who come by themselves and want to meet new people. If you would like to register or would like more information, please contact Tom Franke at the camp office, 812-342-4815.

The Let the Children Come capital campaign for the new camp has begun! Due to a demand to come to Camp Lakeview that greatly exceeds our existing capacity, we have been forced to turn away hundreds of children each summer. We believe that God is calling us to expand, and we believe it is essential to continue to call upon God to bless this project. That is why we have established a Prayer Committee for the capital campaign.

The prayer team needs your help! And the best part is that it will only cost you some thought and time. One of our goals is to have at least 100 prayer warriors, and we are about halfway there. Prayer warriors will select at least one day of the week to pray for the camp and for the “Let the Children Come” capital campaign. The work of the team will culminate at a Prayer Walk on the new camp site during the camp’s Open House on Sunday June 6, 2010.

If you are willing to be a member of the team, please e-mail our Prayer Committee Chair, Ed Tower, at towered@att.net. Let him know which day(s) of the week would be best for you to pray, and include your e-mail address so that he can send you suggestions, special prayer requests, construction updates, and campaign updates to include in your prayer time.

If you know someone else who loves Camp Lakeview and would be a great prayer warrior, please inform them of the opportunity to serve God as a member of the prayer team. If they are willing, have them contact Ed at the e-mail address above.

Camp Lakeview is looking for college-aged Christians who love children, love their Lord, and are willing to put their faith into action by serving in our summer ministry.

We will need to fill positions for counselors, cooks, lifeguards, first-aid coordinator, wranglers, maintenance, program directors, and an arts and crafts coordinator. The summer begins with staff training on May 24th and ends on August 13th. The base pay for all positions is $240 per week.

Don’t delay! We hope to complete our staff selection by late-February. So if you or someone you know is qualified and interested, call Tim Stair at the camp office NOW at 812-342-4815. We would be happy to answer your questions or send you an application.

We’re Seeking J.C.’s Too!

The “Junior Counselor” (“J.C.”) program is a two-week volunteer program focusing on developing Christian leadership and relational skills. J.C.’s will be paired with a counselor to assist in all aspects of camp life for up to 10 campers. This is a great way to experience first-hand the work that goes into our ministry to children.

If you are currently in Grades 10-12 and would like to receive a Junior Counselor application or more information, contact Sarah Groth at the camp office (812-342-4815). The application and interview deadline is February 28th, so don’t put this off! We can accept no more than 70 applicants, and older applicants will be given preference during certain programs.

With Memorial Day coming later, schools starting earlier, and an LCMS National Youth Gathering smack in the middle of July, scheduling for the summer of 2010 was difficult. There were many changes that had to be made to try to accommodate as many people as possible.

The biggest change comes with our short sessions. These four-day, three-night programs for younger campers have traditionally been scheduled back-to-back in July. Now, we have moved them to the ends of the summer. The first one will go June 1-4 (Tuesday-Friday) and allow families to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend together before heading off to camp. The second is August 8-11 (Sunday-Wednesday) and will allow campers to attend who may have to start school later in the week.

Another obstacle was the National Youth Gathering, scheduled for July 17-21. Since this event attracts youth currently in eighth grade and up, we moved our older weeks of camp, trip camps, and Awestruck Weekend to avoid conflicts with the NYG. Now, our oldest week of regular camp is scheduled for June 27-July 2.

One thing that didn’t change — our prices! Because the economy has forced many families to struggle, we decided to help by keeping our prices the same as 2009.

Over the coming months, we’ll continue to pray, plan, tweak, and recruit – all with the goal of making 2010 the best year ever!

Another summer has come and gone, and 2009 will go into the books as one of the best ever. The staff was great, the weather was great (we avoided the heat waves), the campers were great, and the grass even stayed green!

Unfortunately, not as many kids were around to enjoy it as last summer. Because of a harsh January snowstorm, many schools had to extend their academic year into the first week of summer camp. This created a slight dip in overall attendance figures even though most weeks were completely filled and had waiting lists. All in all, 1,772 campers attended a summer program and enjoyed the fun and fellowship that has become a trademark of Camp Lakeview — compared to a record 1,856 last year when every week was full.

The summer of 2009 was filled with swimming, horseback rides, campfire devotions, mud-pit tug-of-wars, cook-outs, sneaking behind enemy lines in “Steal the Bacon”, all-camp monopoly, leather crafts, Three Chartreuse Buzzards, garbage ball, flashlight wars, silly skits, and a hilarious puppet monkey named “Tiggy”. We had a great time!

Most importantly, though, campers were told about a God who loves them dearly! It is through this gracious God that we have been blessed this summer. To Him be all the glory and praise for another great summer season at Camp Lakeview!

Camp Lakeview is no longer Camp Lakeview! Well, sort of. Due to the construction of the new camp site across the road, we can’t keep calling everything “Camp Lakeview” anymore. It gets confusing! So the organization which owns Camp Lakeview (the South Central Lutheran Camp Association of Indiana, Inc.) will now do business as “Lakeview Ministries”. Very soon, Lakeview Ministries will be operating two camp sites. The original one will continue to be known as “Camp Lakeview”, while the new camp across the road will go by a different name yet to be determined. (Although “Lakeview Villages” has been tossed around as a possibility.)

Along with a new name, our organization is also receiving a new corporate logo, shown on the left. The old logo (on right) was placed into service before the first summer camping season in 1965. It has served us well, but it was time to simplify and modernize the logo, using many of the key elements found in the original that will continue to identify us as a Christian camp. We hope you approve of the upgrade!
